Mathematics for Queensland Year 10

Barbara Wasley, Debra Manché and Robyn Winter

Publisher:          Oxford University Press

ISBN:              0195539893

Mathematics for Queensland Year 10 – the first in a series of three textbooks written by experienced Queensland teachers to meet the requirements of the Queensland Junior Mathematics Syllabus 8 –10.

The writing style is user-friendly so that students can use the text both independently and under teacher guidance. The authors have paid particular attention to the correct and logical use of mathematical language and symbolism.

Most topics are introduced using a guided discovery learning approach. Outcomes and discoveries are then formally stated to allow teachers the option of a more traditional approach.

Each chapter is divided into sections which can be used as teaching units. These sections are subdivided further by signposts to relevant questions within an exercise.

Key features:

Each chapter is prefaced by relevant stimulating and/or historical material which     could be used as a springboard for more extensive discussion and research.

Carefully graded exercises contain a balance of questions which provide both ample consolidation and opportunities for the development of problem-solving techniques.

Student checklist of chapter objectives, a review test and two review sets are provided at the end of each chapter.

Chapters contain relevant explorations which provide opportunities for:

·        Discovery concepts in a concrete way

·        Extending students laterally and/or vertically

·        Stimulating less-motivated students

·        Small-group co-operative interaction

·        Mathematical communication

An activities section is provided at the back of each text and contains a wide range of puzzles, games and other recreational activities.

A separate teacher Resource Book complements the series, and contains:

·        BLMs for worksheets which link directly with the text.

·        BLMs for commonly used resources, e.g. grid papers, nets, maps, etc.
